What a 32-pounder cannon actually sounds like
If you’ve never heard an enormous cannon fired at close range, this is your chance.
Crownhill Fort brings its defences to life with an evening of live rifle and carronade firing — including a blank round from a 32-pounder.
Start with a short introduction to the Palmerston Forts, then explore the museum before heading to the rifle gallery for the main event.
It’s loud, smoky, and as close as you’ll get to 19th-century warfare without enlisting.
6pm to 8pm, Thursday 30th April, Crownhill Fort. Tickets: £5. Car parking £2.50
Also open 11am–4pm on Easter Monday (6th April), with two gunfire displays included.

Accused. Tried. Hanged. Exeter, 1682
Exeter is the last place in England where people were hanged for the supposed crime of witchcraft.
The most infamous case — the Bideford Witches — ended in hangings in 1682. But Exeter’s history of accusations, fear and executions runs deep.
A talk by historian Mark Stoyle uncovers the real stories of those accused between 1588 and 1670 — and how easily suspicion turned into a death sentence.
7pm, Thursday 9th April, Leonardo Hotel, Exeter. Tickets: £5
