Exeter races, Seawatch, Ranulph Fiennes, create a wreath, plant a tree, The Cabarats

💕 Alright Me Luvvers!

We’re off with another hot issue of interesting and unique Devon events plus competitions to enjoy. Have fun!

Back a winner (maybe) at England’s highest racecourse

On top of the Haldon Hills and surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside, Exeter Racecourse is the highest in the land.

With 3 meetings this month there are plenty of opportunities for an exciting day out whether you or (more likely) the bookies win.

Grab a burger and take in the atmosphere outside or sit in The Denman Bar for fish and chips and watch the racing in the warm and dry.

Alternatively, go upmarket with a luxury hospitality lunch package for £120 and be treated like royalty in The Desert Orchid Restaurant.

Friday 10th November | The Betway Holden Gold Cup Day £20

Monday 20th November | Afternoon racing £18

Sunday 26th November | Devon Air Ambulance Raceday £20

Join Seawatch Saturday and, fingers crossed, you might see a whale

Devon Wildlife Trust are starting monthly sea watches at Wembury Point, south Devon, on the first Saturday of each month.

With other local volunteers and marine experts, you’ll scan for whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea birds from the land, and learn about their behaviour.

The free events are aimed at engaging more people with the sea and collecting data on marine wildlife.

Turn up with binoculars, lunch, camping chair and weather appropriate clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Wembury Marine Centre, Church Rd, Wembury PL9 0HP

The first event is this Saturday, 4th November, 10am to 4.30pm weather dependent. Details.

An inspirational evening with explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes

If you’re an adventurous type, there may be no better inspiration than the exploits of Ranulph Fiennes.

He was the first person to cross the Arctic and Antarctica on foot, and the oldest Briton to summit Everest, achieved on his third attempt.

Losing half his fingers from frostbite and suffering a heart attack hasn’t stopped him.

You can spend an evening with the man and hear first hand how a mischievous childhood and military training led to a thirst for challenge.

The talk is accompanied by personal photographs and home videos.

Will he inspire you to seek out your own life adventures?

Friday 17th November, 7.30pm. Plymouth Pavilions. Tickets from £35.10

Enjoy a fun evening, creating this Christmas wreath with friends

[PARTNER] Get into the festive spirit with a Christmas wreath making workshop.

It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening with family, friends, or work colleagues.

Emma’s Flowers in Plymouth is taking bookings for popular wreath workshops in November and early December.

Ideal for beginners, the workshops include all the natural materials you need and full guidance as you build from scratch. Refreshments are included in the £45 price.

Here’s what Fiona said after attending a workshop last year: “We had such fun and would highly recommend. We all came away feeling accomplished and very much in the Christmas Spirit. Thank you.”

Woolwell Centre, Darklake Lane, Woolwell, Plymouth PL6 7TR

Tuesday 28th November | 12.30pm until 3.30pm

Wednesday 29th November | 6.30pm until 9pm

Saturday 9th December | 10am until 1pm

Give a day of your time to the planet and help plant 700 trees

Every little helps applies to the planet as well as your supermarket shop, and you can do your bit at a volunteer tree-planting near South Molton.

Charity Protect Earth plants trees on unused and degraded farmland, creates wildflower meadows, and helps with tree maintenance for struggling saplings.

You can assist on a smallholding and riding stables site overlooking Exmoor on the weekend of November 11th and 12th, 10am to 4pm.

It involves planting 700 saplings across several fields in blocks to provide habitat for wildlife and creating shade and shelter for the horses.

The tree mix includes: Alder, Aspen, Downy Birch, Field Maple, Hornbeam, Crab Apple, Common Oak, Rowan, Small-leaved Lime, Wild Cherry, Goat Willow, Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Hazel and Spindle.

No previous experience is needed and a demonstration will be provided.

Listen to something different: music with a twist from the Balkans

Like musical variety? How about some traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern sounds?

The Cabarats take diversity further by combining these unusual (to our ears) genres with lively reggae and ska.

The unorthodox quintet are stopping off in North Devon as part of an autumn tour promoting a new album.

You’ll hear an intriguing mix of instruments such as accordion, oud (similar to a lute), keyboard and brass.

Catch them at Woolacombe Village Hall EX34 7BY on Saturday 18th November. Tickets £11.55
