Cool Things To Do 13.06.24

James Bond concert, American car show, medieval jousting, Budleigh music festival, orchestral fireworks

🌞 Welcome Cream and Jam Lovers!

Relax in the warm to classical music or clamber around a Torquay beach cave?

(You can’t say we never offer variety)

Bond classics by candlelight

Our favourite is Skyfall, what’s yours?

You’ll get yours and pretty much all of the others from the London Concertante orchestra at the 007 music night.

Male and female voices perform hits including Diamonds are Forever, No Time to Die, Skyfall, From Russia with Love, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Thunderball, Goldfinger, and Nobody Does it Better.

All by atmospheric candlelight. Not real flames. That would be dangerous.

Exeter Cathedral. Thursday 20th June, 7:30pm to 8:45pm. Tickets from £22.38

An all American petrol fest in Dawlish

Love big powerful glamorous motors?

You’ll love Cofton’s American Car Show in Dawlish.

Classic US cars line up (video) and take to the streets around the town, with live music, family activities and food.

Looks like a great day out, even if you’re not a petrolhead.

Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June.

Feel-good classics and jazz by the sea

Organisers are celebrating a bit of a coup by booking the BBC Big Band for the Budleigh Music Festival

The band is joined by legendary jazz singer Elaine Delmar boasting a recording career stretching back to the 1960s.

The concert is part of a week of lunchtime, evening and special mainly classical performances by the sea.

The line-up includes pianists Ethan Locke and Benjamin Grosvenor, vocal ensemble Tenebrae, mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly and Senegalese harp player Seckou Keita with members of the Bath Philharmonia Orchestra.

Thursday 27th June to Sunday 7th July.

Tickets £5 to £35.

How knights of old settled their misunderstandings

See for yourself how hot and sweaty it must have been as they tried to bash hell out of each other.

And you can try your own fighting skills in a (slightly) less violent way with a spot of axe throwing or archery at the Jousting and Medieval Fayre in Exeter.

Jousting, sword fighting battles, jesters, falconry and catapult building take you back to the Middle Ages for a day.

In the medieval craft workshops there’s shield painting, willow work and medieval needlework.

Powderham Castle EX6 8JQ. Sunday 23rd June. Tickets. Adult £14.95, senior £13.95, child £10.95.

A summer selection of orchestral fireworks

Conductor Philip Mackenzie energises the Amadeus Orchestra with Rachmaninov and Britten at Exeter Cathedral next month.

First up is Carter Pann’s visceral sprint Slalom, followed by Rachmaninov’s sublime Piano Concerto No 2 - the score for the classic movie Brief Encounter.

After the interlude are Britten’s colourful masterpieces, Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

Kasparas Mikužis is on piano.

Friday 19th July, 7pm. Tickets £16.50 to £38.50

Devon Curiosities #11: Hindu Temple Caves

One for the adventurous among us, and please be aware of the risks when visiting.

The main set of caves are at Livermead Head, and there are more at Corbyn Head, both between Torquay and Paignton.

They are only accessible from the beach at low tide or by sea (popular with wild swimmers).

Their presence in the exotic red rock and the fact they are hard to reach adds to the air of mystery.

Victorian author Charles Kingsley described them as “A labyrinth of double or triple caves like a Hindu temple.”

Plan your visit with safety in mind, taking account of the tide, and watch this video first.
