An insider’s free photographic tour of Drake’s Island

Former Drake’s Island warden Bob King reveals the secrets of Drake’s island through photographs at a free talk in Plymouth.

He was employed as caretaker by former owner Dan McCauley and part of his job was to research the history of the island, also known as St Nicholas Island.

His illustrated talk will be a journey through the 6 acres of Tudor fortifications, 19th-century military buildings and underground tunnels, now up for sale again for the second time in a decade.

Current owner Morgan Phillips, a Plymouth businessman, is believed to have paid £6m for the island in 2019, and is selling with planning permission for a 43-bed hotel.

12.30pm to 1.30pm, Tuesday 25th November, Plymouth Athenaeum. Tickets

Devon Curiosities #83: Vixen Tor

Many moons ago, perhaps longer than most people today can remember, you used to be able to walk to and climb on Vixen Tor.

The 120ft lump of granite is the tallest and best-looking free-standing rock on Dartmoor, said to resemble a sphinx, a female fox, or a man wearing a cap.

Inaccessible, yet wreathed in local legend. One says ugly witch Vixana lived there with the power to summon mists, confuse travellers and lead them to their death in the nearby bog.

Ironically, she met a sticky end the same way.

And Vixen Tor is set in a magnificent location, with all-round views, which makes what happened even more disappointing.

In 2003 the land was bought by farmer Mary Alford who, on the advice of her insurers, banned all access. The reason being that people might injure themselves and sue her for damages.

Not an attitude shared by hundreds of other Dartmoor landowners who welcome walkers on their land, or the National Park Authority which could also be sued if you trip over a rock they didn’t warn you about.

There were some protests, a bit of trespassing and a court case which raised hopes that access might be regained. Sadly, not enough evidence of previous public use was presented and the case was lost.

Barbed wire and no entry signs there may be, but it’s still worth getting up as close as you can to see this awesome piece of geology. Exact location
