Two rock superstars come to Exeter next month — and tickets for their Powderham Castle concerts are still available.

See Alanis Morrissette on Friday 26th June. Lewis Capaldi now has an extra date, Saturday 27th June, after his Sunday concert sold out.

Tickets: from £85

P.S. Powderham’s grabbing attention in another rather dramatic way. See below.

Royal Dockyard Open Day

Whether you’re curious about naval heritage, fascinated by engineering and or just looking for a great free day out, this event is for you.

Devonport Open Days is the one chance of the year for the public to step inside and look around Plymouth’s historic and advanced naval facilities.

Following in the tradition of Navy Days, the day serves to connect with the local community and inspire Royal Navy and Babcock employees of the future.

Look forward to behind‑the‑scenes access, ship tours, and engineering demos.

10am to 4pm, Friday 24th July. Tickets

Stand-up, songs and a fair bit of mischief

[Partner promotion] Dominic Frisby brings a mix of comedy, music and sharp social commentary to Ilfracombe.

He’s built a following doing what most performers won’t — saying something, then turning it into a song.

“We’re All Far Right Now” has racked up millions of views, while “17 Million Eff Offs” made the Top 40. Expect plenty more in that vein, with anecdotes and observations on modern Britain.

He’s joined by jazz pianist Chad Lelong, which turns the evening into something more like a live cabaret.

If you like your comedy a bit provocative and not entirely predictable — this will be right up your street.

7.30pm, Saturday 16th May, Monkey Puzzle at North Devon Resort, Ilfracombe. Tickets: £17.50

When all of Dartmouth becomes a stage

The harbour town turns into a 3-day, town-wide music stage for the ever-popular Dart Music Festival between Friday 15th and Sunday 17th May.

More than 100 gigs take place in churches, bandstands and on the waterside — making the experience less of a festival and more of a musical wander.

Not many events can match the sheer range of Dartmouth, with classical, rock, choral, soul, folk and opera sitting side by side.

Best of all, nearly all acts are free to attend. The festival is run by volunteers and built on a “music for all” ethos, relying on donations.

Dare you take the Naked Heart walk?

It’s a “clothing optional” charity walk that has tongues wagging and raised the profile of an important charity.

The Naked Heart Walk at Powderham Castle is not just a quirky fundraiser — you can turn it into a half-day experience with yoga and a cream tea included in the price.

At the core is a 3-mile walk through the castle grounds to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and highlight active living to prevent heart disease.

Whether you are fully-clothed, semi-clothed or completely naked, make sure to check the forecast!

12pm to 5pm, Saturday 16th May. Tickets: £18.04

From undressed to dressed up

The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway Steampunk Gathering is one of North Devon’s most eccentric days out — a celebration of Victoriana and seaside spectacle.

This Saturday the twin towns are a swirl of costumes, street theatre and live performances — with locals dressed as steampunkers, pirates and time travellers.

Something is happening almost every 15 minutes: live bands and choirs, barrel organs, roaming dancers, teapot racing and shanty crews. No excuse to be bored!

Travel on the water-powered cliff railway linking the towns is just £5 all day — but only if you are dressed up.

10am to 5pm, Saturday 9th May. Details

Devon Curiosities #106: The lost village of Hound Tor

Climb one of the most dramatic tors on Dartmoor — with its devilish links to the Hound of the Baskervilles — and then explore the vanished village below.

Hound Tor is a short walk from the road and the jagged granite stacks evoke the mystery and curiosity captured by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel of Dartmoor.

From the top you’ll see a scatter of low stone walls. You’re looking at Hound Tor Medieval Village, also known as Hundatorra, the ghostly remains of a 13th-century farming hamlet.

You’re free to wander the outlines of longhouses, where people lived with their animals. You can still see the farming strips where oats and rye were grown to support a community of maybe 20-30 people.

As you head off for your bacon sandwich or cream tea at The Cafe on the Green in Widecombe, ponder our good fortune not to have to live on a rocky hillside.

Swallerton Gate car park, just off the B3387
