Treehouse with a bath and cinema

Unique places to stay in 2025

☕️ Hello Devon Fans,

There’s no better place for brunch than Elvira’s in Plymouth. Here’s Andy and Lara about to tuck in after their team meeting (a swim in Firestone Bay)

Devon is blessed with amazing places to stay, but they get booked up fast. So if you fancy one of these unique hidey holes in 2025, start planning now.

A treehouse with a bath and a cinema

Oh, and did you need an indoor-outdoor bathtub? This is your place.

This designer hideaway has a private woodland terrace where you can swing in a hammock or cook a pizza in the wood fired oven.

The master bedroom has a 4-poster superking and the second room 2 bunk beds. Up to 2 dogs are allowed.

All guests have access to 20 acres of winding paths through woodland, wildflower meadows, and alongside a river.

Beaches at Instow, Westward Ho! and Bude are all within 15 miles.

Close to the edge

Views over the green and blue Dart estuary are one the many lures of this quirky and gorgeous-looking pad.

What else? A wooden spiral staircase, superking beds, a marble bath, walk-in shower and a wrap-around glass and teak decked balcony.

Convenience-wise, it’s a short walk to the river ferry taking you to Dartmouth, on foot or by car.

For history or garden enthusiasts see Dartmouth Castle, Agatha Christie's home Greenway and the art deco house by the sea Coleton Fishacre.

For walkers, the South West Coast Path is literally on your doorstep.

For chillers, just stay where you are and look at the boats.

Total tranquility by the water

Quiet and private, this snug waterside nest is ideal for couples and comes with a kayak, a bath with a view and blackout blinds.

The kayak even has room for a dog (well behaved ones welcome) and can take you to unexplored creeks, empty beaches or into town for a coffee.

Open and airy in summer with big balcony doors, the new build has underfloor heating, is well insulated and a log burner for more cosiness.

Evening times, there are barbecues and music at the nearby Millbrook Inn or Port Waterhouse.

Charming apartments with a 65-acre garden

Ideal for plant and tree lovers, these holiday apartments in the grounds of RHS Rosemoor include special access to the grounds outside normal opening hours.

Have your own private viewing of the year round colour any time from sunrise to sunset (without the crowds if you choose).

Rosemoor House is part of a beautiful 65-acre park in the Torridge Valley between Dartmoor and Exmoor.

From there you can visit picture postcard Clovelly, take the Tarka Trail on bike or foot or see the Damien Hirst statue Verity in Ilfracombe.

The apartments, Magnolia, Camellia and Azalea, sleeping 2-4 people, are available for 3, 4 or 7-night stays. (No children or dogs).

Ocean views with a waterfall

How do you like your ocean views? From a hotel room, beach hut or holiday cottage?

This place has them all in a sheltered spot just outside Torquay, with a spa on the beach and a waterfall pool.

For water’s edge accommodation on The English Riviera, this is one of the best (with the awards to prove it), hugging the rocky coast yet near to the attractions.

Take in Buckfast Abbey, the Newton Abbot racecourse and the offbeat boutiques of Totnes, not forgetting the shiny lights of Torbay.

Dog friendly too.

Devon Curiosities #30: Odd Fellows Hall (Egyptian House), Plymouth

It’s seen better days obviously, but this hall with a strange frontage is only one of two Egyptian style buildings in the country (the other is in Penzance).

The property was built in Devonport in 1832 by John Foulston during a fashion for Egyptian style buildings following the Napoleonic campaigns.

It has been used as a school, a public library, a church organisation, and since 1968, the Ker Street Social Club.

There are Egyptian features and motifs inside and out, including triangular shaped door surrounds, leaded windows, and ornate columns and friezes.

The building is Grade I listed. Ker Street PL1 4EJ
